World Class Team

In June 2009, TransCanada and ExxonMobil agreed to work together to advance the Alaska Pipeline Project. Since then, a world class team, possessing an unprecedented combination of strengths, has been working to develop pipeline and gas treatment facilities that would become the largest privately financed construction project in the history of North America.

TransCanada owns and operates one of the largest, most sophisticated natural gas pipeline networks in the world and has extensive construction and operating experience in cold weather climates. The company holds the construction certificates and property rights for the pipeline route through Canada under the Northern Pipeline Act, and has extensive expertise in efficiently advancing pipeline projects through the regulatory process.

ExxonMobil has proven global mega-project management experience and a long history of Arctic project successes and technological innovations.  ExxonMobil has repeatedly delivered world-class projects on time and within budget, and has proven expertise in innovative gas treatment, pipeline and compression technologies.

Both TransCanada and ExxonMobil bring their substantial financial strength to the project.

TransCanada and ExxonMobil share a common goal-an Alaskan natural gas pipeline that is constructed with the full support of the State of Alaska, the U.S. and Canadian governments, and the major North Slope producers.

Experts agree that all interested parties will eventually need to be aligned in one project in order to complete such an enormous and complex undertaking. The Alaska Pipeline Project and its alignment with the State of Alaska under the AGIA process offers the best path forward for success.

The TransCanada Advantage

  • TransCanada has 50 years of successful pipeline operations, including pipelines in severe cold weather environments.
  • It operates more than 37,000 miles (60,000 km) of pipelines.
  • TransCanada delivers 20 percent of all natural gas consumed each day in North America.
  • The company has extensive experience in meeting the regulatory requirements of U.S. and Canada in every area from tariffs to taxation to environmental review.
  • TransCanada has already secured access to the Canadian portion of the pipeline route - 60 percent of the total pipeline corridor - which is documented in a treaty between Canada and the U.S. and a certificate issued by Canada’s pipeline regulatory body.

The ExxonMobil Advantage

  • ExxonMobil, as the largest holder of proven natural gas resources on the North Slope, has the ability to contribute a significant portion of the natural gas required to fill the pipeline.
  • The company has world class project management expertise and has developed and operates some of largest oil and gas projects in the world, a track record extending from such different regions as far eastern Russia to sub-Saharan Africa.
  • ExxonMobil has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to deliver world-class projects on time and within budget.
  • ExxonMobil is well known throughout the industry for technology innovations, including breakthroughs in the areas of gas treatment, pipeline, and compression technology.
  • It also brings to the project the detailed US$125 million study of the pipeline system that was completed in 2002.
