Community Investment
The Alaska Pipeline Project's Community Investment program provides project funding to external non-profit and governmental organizations and business and trade associations in communities in Alaska and Canada where we live, work and conduct our business.
In selecting grants for funding, we look for community investment opportunities that maximize synergies between meeting important community needs and advancing APP's business, stakeholder engagement, and government and community relations objectives.
The APP Community Investment program is integrated with the project's broader Socioeconomic Management objectives, including being supportive of the following principles:
- Impact Assessment and Mitigation: The project recognizes its activities have potential economic and social impacts on communities and other stakeholders, and it strives to avoid and mitigate negative impacts and enhance positive impacts.
- Community Relations: The Alaska Pipeline Project proactively consults with stakeholders and acts with respect toward individuals of all cultures, engages in dialogue, and collaborates with local communities.
- Cultural Heritage and Diversity: The project seeks to develop and implement focused community engagement activities respecting indigenous peoples' traditions and cultures.
- Economic Development: The Alaska Pipeline Project seeks to have a positive economic impact on the communities in which it operates. The project is committed to building capacity wherever it operates by making strategic community investments.
Our Words in Action
Through its Community Investment program, the Alaska Pipeline Project is supporting many important organizations and events in Alaska and Canada, including:
Adäka Cultural Festival
The Adäka Cultural Festival, a nonprofit event hosted by the Council of Yukon First Nations, showcases the Yukon’s diverse art and culture while creating national and international networking opportunities for artists and performers. The Alaska Pipeline Project supports the festival’s dedication to cultivating talent and sponsored the 2011 festival.
Alaska Federation of Natives
The Alaska Pipeline Project supported the Alaska Federation of Natives 2011 annual convention because it believes in the AFN's mission to enhance and promote the cultural, economic and political voice of the Alaska Native community. The AFN is the largest statewide Native organization in Alaska and the AFN convention is the largest representative gathering of any Native peoples in the United States.
Ahtna Heritage Foundation
The Ahtna Heritage Foundation’s Heritage Dancers is a young Ahtna Athabascan traditional dance group. The Alaska Pipeline Project proudly supported the group in 2011 for its mission to revitalize and perpetuate the Ahtna traditions, language and cultural values through education and training.
Resource Development Council for Alaska
The Resource Development Council for Alaska is a statewide, non-profit, membership-funded organization made up of businesses and individuals from all resource sectors (oil and gas, mining, fishing, timber, and tourism), as well as Native corporations, support sectors, labor unions, and local governments. Through RDC these interests work together to promote and support responsible development of Alaska's resources. In 2011, the Alaska Pipeline Project supported the council's annual conference and summer meeting.
Yukon Quest
APP is proud to participate as a Major Sponsor of the 2012 Yukon Quest for the second consecutive year. Yukon Quest, a 1,000-mile dog-sledding race between Whitehorse and Fairbanks, is a unique event highlighting the cooperation, friendship and shared values of residents in the Yukon and Alaska.. We are proud to help showcase northern culture, tradition and character across North America.
Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous
The Alaska Pipeline Project supported the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous' 2011 festival because we know the importance of preserving history and honoring tradition. The Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous is an annual festival that celebrates Yukon's first people, the Klondike Gold Rush and Yukon tradition.
