Employment & Training

The Alaska Pipeline Project is committed to meeting the local hiring and training provisions of AGIA and is currently developing local content plans for workforce and supplier development in Alaska and Canada.   The project expects to generate thousands of jobs in Alaska and Canada through the construction phase of the project.  Approximately 500 long-term jobs are expected during the ongoing operations of the project.

To date, the project has employed hundreds of workers, including engineers, scientists and technicians, to conduct field studies along the pipeline corridor. The majority of these workers are Alaskan and Canadian residents employed by local businesses and suppliers.

As part of its commitment to local hiring and training, the project is working with the State of Alaska Dept. of Labor and Workforce Development and other organizations in Alaska and Canada in their efforts to develop and implement training programs for local workers.

In Alaska, the project is an active member of the Alaska Gas Pipeline Training Plan Committee, and is participating with the state, contractors, labor organizations and area universities to implement the Alaska Gasline Strategic Training Plan. The initial focus of the committee is to identify future project workforce needs and skills requirements. This will lead to the development and implementation of training programs to meet these needs and requirements.

Pipe Donation to the Fairbanks Pipeline Training Center

In October 2010, the Alaska Pipeline Project donated sections of pipe to the Fairbanks Pipeline Training Center. The project donated samples of 48" wide pipe to allow the center's trainees and apprentices to conduct welding tests on the type and size of pipe to be utilized by an Alaska natural gas pipeline and to enhance their pipe handling skills.

The Fairbanks Pipeline Training Center is supported by labor unions, pipeline companies and contractors to develop an Alaskan workforce with the skills needed to work on a gas pipeline project. The donation reflects the project's support for training programs that address anticipated workforce needs and reinforce the project's ongoing collaboration with the state of Alaska's Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
